VISION

OUR PUBLIC SPACES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO REDEFINE NORTHERN MANHATTAN AS A DESTINATION UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN NEW YORK CITY.

Our blue-green park spaces and wetlands could expand horizons as classrooms. Our public schools could be known for their hands-on environmental programs that get kids outside and on the water. Imagine our waterfront buzzing with the Science Barge, Sloop Clearwater, boat building, and community boathouses with all sorts of activities from regattas to physical rehabilitation. In 1939 the New York Times called Northern Manhattan “A Scenic Recreation Land.” Can we regain that title and more? Our unused industrial and municipal spaces can be transformed into vibrant destinations that attract residents, students, visitors, entrepreneurs, and green jobs. Can we can convert an old subway repair shed into an indoor wetland for growing healthy and tasty fish and vegetables? Can we re-purpose the Department of Sanitation smokestack site into a celebrated arts and music space? There are only three green markets north of 125th street. Can we do better? Could we use the green markets to raise awareness of our public spaces and engage residents in wildlife rehabilitation, local gardens, park restoration and other community efforts?

NORTHERN MANHATTAN IS READY FOR A NEW LEVEL OF DISCUSSION, CREATIVITY, AND VISION ON HOW OUR PUBLIC SPACES CAN CONTRIBUTE TO QUALITY OF LIFE,LOCAL IDENTITY, AND ECONOMIC VITALITY. CONSERVANCY NORTH, A BROAD-BASED VOLUNTEER DRIVEN NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED AS A MEETING GROUND FOR STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING THE PARKS DEPARTMENT, CITY GOVERNMENT, COMMUNITY LEADERS, AND RESIDENTS, TO WORK CLOSELY TOGETHER IN ORDER TO PRESERVE PUBLIC SPACE AND ENSURE IT IS UTILIZED IN A WAY THAT MAXIMIZES ITS VALUE TO THE COMMUNITY.
