Reflections of Summer in Inwood Forest

The asphalt is hot, baking in the summer sun.  Buildings are heating up too, the bricks warm to the touch.  There is little relief in the city on an August day.  Everything seems more intense, more consequential.  There is a feeling a storm is approaching.

FREE SUMMER CAMP FOR KIDS IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, INWOOD & MARBLE HILL(Applications here/aquí)


Uptown parents seeking an enriching free summer program for their children may apply for openings in Columbia University's athletic summer camps for 2015.

ELIGIBILITY. The child who will attend camp MUST live in one of the following zip codes: 10032, 10033, 10034,10040 and10463, (Marble Hill only, including Tibbett Ave (below W. 230 St.), Terrace View Ave, Teunissen Pl., Adrian Ave, Van Corlear Ave, Fort Charles Place, Jacobus Place, Marble Hill Ave (below W. 230 St.), W. 227 St., W. 228 St., Broadway (below W. 230 St.),and Marble Hill Houses.)

Openings will be available in the 4- or 5-day Baker Field Soccer, Baseball, and Roar-ee's Cubs Camp programs. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 8, 2015. The application is available at the links at the heading of this article, as well as from the Offices of NYS Senator Adriano Espaillat and NYC Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez. Applicants will be selected via a lottery hosted by Conservancy North and the Police Athletic League on Friday May 15, 2015.

As part of the community benefits agreement and in response to the Community's concerns regarding the expansion of the sports complex at Baker Field on 218th Street, Columbia University has agreed to provide sports summer camp scholarships to 32 children in Community District 12, Manhattan and Marble Hill each year, beginning in 2011.

Conservancy North will serve as the administrator of this 2014 Camp Scholarship Program.

There will be 13 scholarships in total for the following week-long soccer camp sessions:
SOCCER, boys & girls ages 6-18 (http://bit.ly/11ac7h9)
Mon-Fri sessions:
    6/15 - 19
    6/22 - 26
    6/29 - 7/3
    7/27 - 31            
    8/3 - 8/7
    8/10 - 8/13  (4 day session)

There will be 4 scholarships in total for the following 4-day baseball camp sessions:

BASEBALL, boys & girls ages 7-12 (http://bit.ly/XUMEY4)
Mon-Thurs sessions:

    6/29 - 7/2        8/3 - 8/6

There will be 15 scholarships in total for the following 5-day CUBS CAMP sessions:
Mon-Fri sessions, boys & girls ages 6 -12 (http://bit.ly/134RYdu)

    7/20 - 7/24              7/27 - 31

All camps start at 9:00 am and end at 3:00 pm, with suggested drop-off between 8:30am-9:00am and pick-up between 2:45pm-3:00 pm. (Soccer camp Fridays are 9:00 am-noon).
